Behind the Song
I have watched as a remarkable group of folks my age and older (some of whom I am lucky enough to call friends) navigate the challenges of life and the marketplace and live life fully. “My old friend” in this song is really a mix of a bunch of folks: Men and women I know or have observed who have impressed me over the last few years. With age has come wisdom and humility, and their music has stayed fresh and fun. —AM

Lyrics
Life’s a Gig
© Andy May, Swift River Music/BMI
From Amsterdam to Aberdeen
Then off to London and in between
To California, then home again
Life’s a gig for my old friend
Life’s a gig for my old friend
Chorus:
This one pays, but this one won’t
This he plays and this he don’t
The music stays, the music grows
And he’s still learning as he goes
From Oregon to the Florida coast
He sings the songs he loves the most
He might slow down, but he don’t know when
Life’s a gig for my old friend
Life’s a gig for my old friend
Chorus
I know he’s got his house in order
With fans like friends, like sons and daughters
They won’t see his like again
Life’s a gig for my old friend
Life’s a gig for my old friend
Chorus
